Pocket Pond

Free

Pocket Pond is a virtual pond with soothing nature sounds. Touching the screen creates a ripple in the water with a matching sound effect. One thing to note is that this app includes in-app purchases for additional ponds and creatures (crabs, frogs, etc.). These in-app purchases can be disabled using the Restrictions feature of iOS (Settings > General > Restrictions). The app also has a thunderstorm effect that you can turn off by swiping up from the lower-right corner and tapping a few times next to Thunderstorm.

Bloom

$3.99

Bloom is not only a great calming app, but also a way to allow children to express their creativity through music. With Bloom, each tap of the screen creates a new note indicated by a colored circle, or you can just let the app play on its own. Tapping the Settings button in the lower-right corner of the screen allows you to change the mood and set a sleep timer if you want to use the app to help with sleep problems. The same developers (musicians Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers) have created another app called Trope that allows you to create soundscapes by tracing abstract shapes on the screen, varying the tone with each movement.

Splatter

Free

Splatter is a great app for children with autism who enjoy painting with vibrant colors and tactile learning. Drawings are created by tapping and dragging anywhere on the screen. A fast drag results in a thin line, a slow one in a thick one. The color can be changed by tapping on the color strip at the bottom of the screen, and the drawing on the screen can be saved to the Camera Roll by tapping the button on the right side of the strip. One issue with this app is that clearing the screen requires a shaking motion, and not all children are able to perform this action. Unfortunately, this shaking motion cannot be simulated with the AssistiveTouch feature built into iOS. This means a parent will need to help if the child wants to clear the screen to start a new drawing.
